A past mod I have done on my little Honda MSX 125cc. Posting this here as many other people have found it helpful, but I’ve not written up proper instructions for it. So here goes!
Just a note: I am no expert, these instructions are simply what I done, follow them at your own risk.
As standard, the indicator lights stay illuminated along with the headlight. These are technically called “Amber Positioning Lights” however I found so many drivers think you are indicating, that they are a real danger on this bike.
Most people would just change out the whole indicators for new, sleeker looking ones. I’m slightly odd in the fact I like the big indicators. They are like big goofy ears on a puppy to me.
So I ordered some bits and got cracking!
Offical Honda parts: Many honda bikes have the same indicators now, so part numbers may change based on the finish of them.

A 2 pronged LED flasher relay (various available)
2x 1157 BAY15D Samsung 22 SMD 5630 LED White Yellow Bulbs
First off, remove the top two bolts on the side of the headlight so you can tilt the headlight forward to gain access to the flasher relay. There is no need to remove the bottom two bolts, but you may need to loosen them a little if they have been done up tightly.
Behind the headlight and directly under the “dash” you will see a little black box with two wires coming from it. This is your flasher relay. In order for any LED indicator lights to work on this bike properly, you need to change this. I got this lovely power parts orange one from ebay, for the grand sum of £1 with free p&p!
The original one is held onto the bracket by a rubber loop, it simply pulls off. Some replacement relays do have a point where you can reuse this rubber loop, mind didn’t so I used Velcro. A zip tie would probably work too.
When removing the wires, take note of what prong they are plugged into, and compare to your replacement. The prongs may not be physically in the same location. Ignore the blue wire in these pictures, this was my temporary ground wire – I accidentally bought a 3 pronged relay to begin with.
Next, remove the amber coloured lenses. These are held in place by one screw located on the underside of the indicator, the side closest to the bike. Once the screw is removed you simply pull them out, they normally have a rubber seal around them, so save this for the new ones to stop the water ingress. Be care when removing these, they can easily snap.
Next, remove your stock bulbs. These can be rather tricky due to the tight space. You need to push “down” on the bulb and rotate it to remove.
Pop in your new bulbs, leaving the lenses off for now as you need to test it first.
Turn on the bike and see what colour the indicators appear. They should both be solid white. If one (or both) are amber, then the terminals on the new bulbs are around the wrong way. Simply rotate the bulbs around so the terminals of the bulb meet the opposite terminals on the bike. (Turning the bike off first remember!)
Test again, both should now be white. Try indicating next. The white light should turn to amber and flash. If it is flashing very quickly/slowly and your new flasher rely has an adjustment wheel, adjust the flashing rate until it is more normal. If your rely does not have an adjustment wheel, it is probably faulty. A lot of the cheap ebay/amazon relays seem to go faulty when they get wet. I have not had a problem however.
If the white turns to solid amber, then you have a grounding issue. This should not be a problem with 2 pronged relays (unless they are faulty). If however you accidentally bought a 3 pronged relay, you will need to ground the 3rd prong. The horn is an easy and simple place to ground it. I ran my bike like this for a few months until I bought the correct 2 pronged relay.
Once it is all tested and working correctly, pop in your nice new clear lenses – remembering the rubber seal and the screw and that’s you done!
Stand back and admire your work!
